I love going out to eat. Very much. All the time.
I like cooking, I guess. It’s okay. I like the eating part better. Jack is really talented in the kitchen (come over for mashed potato pizza on the grill one night), so he’ll cook mainly on Saturdays. We don’t really go out to eat often, because we have small-and-sometimes-loud children and dining out every night wouldn’t be fiscally responsible. But…
There’s this really amazing Turkish restaurant a few minutes from our house. We always order the “mixed appetizer.” It really deserves a more clever name, but it IS a mixed appetizer – hummus, eggplant, and other yummy things to spread on warm, crusty bread. Divine. And the waitstaff is so nice to my kids. Rembot is allergic to nuts and seeds. They always bring her separate, not-seedy bread and point out what’s okay for her to eat and what isn’t. So nice!
There’s also a great Thai restaurant close by. I started going there when they opened up and met the owner and his fam. They make me feel like an insider. They gave me a little card giving me 10% off my check every time I go. And being a creature of habit, I always order the same thing – sweet and sour beef with cashews – four stars hot. Four stars isn’t even an option on the menu, y’all! It only goes up to three. THAT’S how important I am there.
And of course the other really appealing aspect of going out is being served. No prep work and no clean-up. (Can I get an amen?)
Enter children (my girls are 6 months old and almost 2 years old) into the picture. Anyone with a pulse knows that sometimes dining with children can be difficult, sucking all of the joy out of my dining out experience. I like to travel with entertainment in my bag, and crayons usually fit the bill. I’ve seen the extremely cutie-cute crayon rolls out in blogland, but I think that would be too bulky for my bag and would take up some prime real estate designated for sippy cups and extra pairs of princess undies. So I took five minutes (maybe even four) and made a super compact crayon holder.
How to Make a Crayon Holder
Step #1: Acquire some mini M&Ms. Eat. Give container to baby to play with as a chew toy.
Step #2: Peel off the label. Use the label as a template to cut out a piece of paper. Decorate piece of paper. Or not. :) I used plain paper because I couldn’t find any patterned paper.
Step #3: Put adhesive on the back of your paper. I used Elmer’s spray adhesive, but I’m guessing just about anything would work. Wrap paper around tube. I ended up decorating after adhering the paper to the tube.
Step #4: Put crayons inside! I fit four of the Twistable crayons – I like these because Rembot can’t break them/crush them into little bits at the dinner table. You could probably fit more of the regular ones, but four is enough for us. :)

This is my favorite type of craft: easy, cute, practical – the trifecta. I’d love to see if you make one of your own!

I love this idea, very creative and I love repurposing anything I can.

Thank you, and I agree. There’s a lot of appeal in repurposing something than, say, going out and purchasing a marketed crayon holder.

Ok, I have a bunch of crushed crayons in the bottom of my purse! I need this! And how have I not seen twistable crayons before? Thanks for sharing this.

Ohhhh giiiirl, twistable crayons are incredible. My toddler can take a regular crayon, peel off the paper, break it in half, collect crayon remnant under her fingernails, and then shatter it into fourteen different pieces in under twelve seconds. It’s sick.

Cute idea! I love projects that reuse something that would otherwise be discarded.

Thanks, Steph! Me too. I just read someone uses them as quarter holders, but I have no use for a quarter holder in my life at this time. :) Maybe if someone frequented a laundromat or.. hmm… slot machine?

My toddler-daughter gets them once in awhile as a “tweat.”
I absolutely had to take the M&Ms label off or I would be getting her hopes up just to dash them mercilessly when she realized that only crayons waited inside. :)
Great idea using Altoid tins!

Ooo. What a great idea. Most of the restaurants we go to always have those cheap crayons that break. This way we can take our own!

True. Funny you say this, because we were out to lunch yesterday, and the restaurant must have gotten a deal on messed up crayons, because all of the crayons said “crayons” backwards.

I find it more productive to let all the loose change pool at the bottom of my bag, so when I’m at the drive-thru @ McDonald’s, I can’t find any money and the guy at the drive-thru window gives me dirty looks.
Actually, your method may be better. :)

These candy tubes are the greatest for holding those personal items that you don’t want to fall out at the cash register lol. They will hold a tampon and a pad and fool anybody that sees them into thinking you just have candy in your bag. They are also great for crochet hooks and other implements to :)

Great idea to bring a few crayons to a restaurant that doesn’t have that. Even at 13 my daughter likes to use the kid place mats. Unfortunately if she is left to her own devices she will make it a bit x rated. She loves to the shock value of me seeing it. Her dad gets more shocked than me anymore. Sigh!

Superb blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely confused .. Any ideas? Appreciate it!

How it it that i’m a mom to 3 kids, the youngest one just turned 4, and i never thought of this. Super Smart. And just roll up some paper and put in there and instant amusement. May still make this for the 4 year old during big church. Thanks
