Hi, everyone! I’m Roo’s mom. My name is Josephine, but my grandchildren and all of my children’s friends call me Lola. It means “grandmother” in the Philippines. I read all of Roo’s blog posts, and my favorite part is reading the comments. I read them all, so I feel like I already know some of you very well. I decided to share some facts about her when she was a kid. I hope you like them.
{Roo here. I’m commenting slash defending myself in blue.}
1) Roo could read before the age of the 3. The first book she ever read by herself was Go, Dog, Go. Roo wrote her first story at the age of six. It’s about a cat and a fish. They were friends. I still have it.
{That story was ballin.’ Cause the cat and the fish were TALKING to each other. And they’re not human. It was crazy!}
2) Roo ran away from home when she was 6. She had a backpack filled with snacks. She hid in the backyard, but I could see her eating them from the kitchen window. She was back in the house after ten minutes.
{I ran out of snacks.}
3) She was a horrible eater when she was little. Refused to eat anything but ice cream sandwiches. She used to sit at the dinner table, and we’d tell her that she couldn’t leave until she ate. So she’d push her plate aside and fall asleep on the table.
{Um. This is no longer a problem for me.}
4) She used to be a spelling bee champion. When she was 10 years old, Roo was up for the state title. She made it to the top three, but then she spelled a word incorrectly. BURST into tears on stage, in front of everyone. Roo sobbed during the awards ceremony, and all of the pictures we have are of her crying while accepting her 3rd place ribbon. The word “incorrigible” brings back bad memories.
{I can’t even talk about this without getting emotional. I studied the dictionary for weeks. The DICTIONARY. WEEKS.}
5) Roo was very sociable, even as a toddler. Loved to talk to people, and when I would tell her not to talk to strangers, she’d wave and blow kisses. So I’d hold her hands, and she’d bat her eyelashes. It was obnoxious, and embarrassing.
{Haters gonna hate, Ma. Haters gonna hate.}
6) I was diagnosed with cancer when Roo was 17. She took care of me during every chemotherapy and radiation session and stayed with me in the hospital during every surgery.
{Good kid brownie points.}
7) I’d send Roo to clean her room.. and when I went back to check on her, she was always hiding under her bed or in her closet, reading a book.
{Can we just stop for a second and look at this dress? “Mom, this is so embarrassing. My collar’s JUST.. not… big enough.”}
8) Doesn’t matter where we are.. she’d fall asleep 9pm sharp. Movies, friends’ houses, head on the table at a Chinese restaurant.
{Dim sum on my face, dim sum in my hair, dim sum everywhere, ooh-oot, ooh-oot}
9) Until she was about 4, if you asked Roo what her name was, she’d tell you it was “Papoo.” No idea where she got it from.
{No clue.}
10) Roo was born in Hong Kong.. for the first three years of her life, she had a British accent. My sister took her for vacation back to the Philippines for a month. When she got back, she had a Filipino accent. Now she has neither. She mimics my accent pretty easily though.
{This one’s a bummer. It would be so cool to have a Britipino accent right now.}
I’m also happy to answer any of your questions! Please leave them in the comments! :) {Easy now, Ma.}
Love,
Lola

Hi Lindsey! I can’t tell you her real full name, but it’s Hebrew-Celtic combo and it means “fairy friend.”

LIndsey you sound like a total stalker! :)
I love this post!! I also ran “away” from home when I was 6, to the corner of our street. It didn’t bring on the hysteria I was looking for so I walked back home. And I always fell asleep in my food at the table, have lots of pictures of me snorin’ in the spaghetti ;-) Okay and lastly, i had a British accent from about age 10 to 14 from living in England. Then I moved to South Carolina. So now I say “Ya’ll coming with?” ;D
And Lola you have raised an amazing daughter!

Put lotion on your hands and massage your wrinkles every night before you to go bed. I promise this helps!

Love this post! Hi Lola, I too wish my Mum had the foresight to teach me not to wrinkle my forehead… Was Roo always so funny? Although I am thinking #5 answers that one. Too cute!

Hello Lola!
It was a great pleasure to read your post! You chose very interesting facts to share about Roo, half of which I could definitely relate to/identify with (Hence, why the word “raglan” makes me grind my molars to this day- Grrr). The pictures are aces! As an ardent fan of your daughter’s writings, please know how appreciated your taking the time to contribute is, by this reader. Hope you’ll post again soon!

Love this! :) And Roo, I totally had a pink dress with a crazy big collar just like yours. Actually, I don’t even think it was a dress… it was a long-sleeved satin jumper thing. Oh, the 80s…

What a great post! I loved it…both points of view. I learned a couple of things, too…that “Lola” means grandmother in the Phillipines, I’m not the only one who ran away from home (no further than the back yard), and I also fell asleep at dinner.

Yay! Roo finally broke down and let Lola post. And she thought it was going to be all embarrassing. I think it is really sweet. Especially number 6 of course. But I totally get why Roo wouldn’t think that was blogworthy. She was just doing what was right. Like she was taught.

HI LOLA!!! I’m so glad Roo let you post and hope this is not the last time. My MIL is Filipina and as I read your post it reminded me of her a lot. My husband makes fun of his mom’s accent too! Roo is so nice and smart which is a reflection of all your hard work in raising her (#6 made me tear up). Hope you are doing better. And when I go back home to NY I would love to meet you and Roo (CT is not far)! I promise I’m not a crazy person and know we can bond over our crazy love of numbers :)

Love your post ladies! When I was four my parents took me to the Philippines and my mom said I forgot how to speak English!
In June I will be reunited with cousins I haven’t seen in 2 decades at my brother’s wedding in Texas! We’re all so excited!
p.s. I still call my one living grandmother “Lola” but my 3 kids call my mom and dad “Nana” and “Papa!” :)

lol @ Britipino. My daughter can pick up accents really well and will mimic anyone. One day I think she’s going to be in a lot of trouble.
What a lovely idea to have your mom talk about you. It’s payback for what we do to our kids. I think my mom would think of really embarrasing things, but then again that would be payback too. lol

Hello there, gorgeous Mum of Roo! I enjoyed this post so much, it must go down in my own private history of memorable posts somewhere Top 10.
My Mum is gonna come to England very soon for her annual visit, and I seriously feel like making her post something similar- it would be such a fun way to learn about myself!
Not that I was anything as cool (or utterly weird) as Roo…
Thanks, girls, I loved reading this!

Sorry.. after reading the comments I just feel the need to add that in Slovene, NONO means grandfather and NONA means grandmother. OMA is grandmother in German, OPA is grandfather. Maybe this is why children of any language communicate so well!
