An Evening with Clinton Kelly

I saw Clinton Kelly.  Up close.  Personal.  Close enough for me to admire his cognac leather shoes and matching belt.

I’m sorry.  What?  Did you just say that you don’t know who Clinton Kelly is?  Oh, honey, no.  You don’t mean it.  Here, take a refresher course.  This is his show, What Not to Wear, that he co-hosts with the inimitable Stacy London.

I recognize that knowing nod.  You’re forgiven.

Clinton Kelly is promoting his new book “Oh No She Didn’t,” and I was fortunate enough to score a ticket to his book signing/talk.  Rembot and Baby Shark are in a playgroup, and a few of us playgroup moms were so excited to go – and of course we all wrung our hands in deliberation of what to wear.

My closet has been a battleground for me.  Having two children back to back has resulted in a surplus of about, oh, twenty pounds, so I’m trying to get used to being comfortable in my skin.  I ended up wearing this:

I’m tired (it was the end of the night and I realized I needed a “what I wore” shot for bloggy purposes), and the Lazy Susan cabinet is open (shout out to baking soda!), but whatevs, yo.

So I drove up to the event, and got stuck in traffic.  (Second shout out goes to my fellow playgroup moms for saving me a front row seat!)  I waited in line to show my ticket.

Oh, hi, Clinton! I'm here!! We're going to hang out really soon, okay, hon?

Clinton came out and he, of course, looked great.  And was hysterical!  And he took audience questions.  And that, dear reader, is when he talked to me.  Me!  ME.  There were a bunch of questions throughout the course of the night, and I mustered up the courage to ask mine.  He walked over to me and put the microphone up to my face.  I was momentarily rendered unconscious.  But then I came to and asked:

“What styles do you recommend for someone who is apple-shaped?”  (Ref: where I told you about that I’m 20 lbs over my norm.)

“First of all, I’d say stop comparing yourself to fruit.”  Cue audience laughter.

“Wait?  Are you talking about you?  You are so cute!”  And that’s when I died.  End of my story.  No?  Okay, I’ll finish.

“I’m sucking it in pretty hard.  And I’m wearing Spanx.”  Cue audience laughter.  Alright, maybe the audience didn’t laugh, but I’m trying to paint a picture of a hysterical and charming dialogue between me and Clint.

“You’re wearing Spanx?  Why?  It’s just me.”  We both throw our heads back and laugh.  I hook my arm around his and we walk up to a woman a row over and talk to her about the rules of chest exposure.  (That last sentence didn’t actually happen.)  He looked directly at me while answering my question, because I’m important because he has good manners. He was able to hold eye contact like a normal person, while I was terribly nervous and drug-addict fidgety.

Anyway, he did the book signing at the end.  He signed my copy of Oh No She Didn’t (which I absolutely read cover-to-cover, that night) and we chatted for about 30 seconds.  Long enough for him to not realize that we were posing for a picture.  We were rushed, and I was kind of making an unintentional crazy face, so I’ll spare you (and Clinton) (and my friend/fellow mom playgrouper next to me who shall not be revealed because she hasn’t read this blog yet) and not defile this picture of Clinton and friend.

I took a picture of the two of us when we got home, though.  He probably wants a copy, don’t you think?

(Third shout out goes to my Pottery Barn Pumpkin Knockoffs behind me.)

How fun!!! So did he ever really answer your question??? Because Ive only had 1 baby and am trying to get used to my “new skin” (Im about 8 lbs over my norm and I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME lose it…i figure I will be at or near 20lbs with baby #2 someday). And were you really sporting spanx?? Ive been wanting to test those puppies out…I think you next post should be all about spanx…a little 411, maybe some do’s and dont’s :)

    Fun post as always Roo!

I think you should put up a sign in your house that says, “Clinton Kelly says I’m cute.” Maybe by the front door. I would.
Also – do you love the book? Should I buy it?

I was thinking about a t-shirt, but he haaates those t-shirts, so it would be a little too ironic for me.

I think I might post a book review! It’s a fun read, for sure. It’s definitely rated PG-13, though.

How fun!! I LOVE Clinton! He is awesome!! Glad you got to ask him a question and get so close to him. Pretty exciting!! :)

It was obnoxiously exciting. I even watched clips from the show to get myself “psyched up” for the evening. Like listening to a band’s cd before the concert. Maybe it’s kind of lame, hmm?

There are some good tips in there. I might post a review. Think two fashiony posts in one week on a nonfashiony blog are too much?

So jealous! I LOVE WNTW and have watched it for years! It looks like you had a blast!

And oh, honey….if you think that is excess baby weight, take a look at my sexy behind. Too much weight + awesome c-section cut abs = flabtastic. You look FABU!

Yessss, I love WNTW. And Nina, you are sooo sweet, but you have not yet seen me naked. And I don’t know why I just wrote “yet” as there are no plans to ever see me naked. I… never mind.

A naked blog post would certainly get you some traffic!!! hehe

I think olive oil would totally work! You don’t really taste the oil, I think it’s just there to crisp them up and carmelize the sugar. I was actually going to do it with olive oil cause I didn’t think I had peanut. Give it a shot and let me know!

I just knew he was gonna say “Stop comparing yourself to fruit!” LOL

I like him so much better than Stacey. Stacey is rude and insulting. Clinton is so cute and charming that you never realize he just made fun of you. (Using “you” in a general term here.)

You know, I like them both. I think they’re both funny-snarky sometimes, but we’ll have to see how they are in the upcoming season. They definitely work well together. I’d love to hang out with them in a non-stalkery environment.

You are SOOOO lucky! That’s awesome that you got a picture, too. I met Chelsea Handler a couple weekends ago and the only pics I got were of her signing other people’s books b/c they said we couldn’t take a picture “with” her. Ugh! I was so mad!!! Anyway, I’m glad you had fun :) BTW.. coming from a mother who used to be tiny like you and is now a size 16/18, you are not apple shaped, you don’t need spanx, and you are crazy if you think you do. I wish I was even twice your size!!! LOL

    [Reply]

    Roo Reply:

That’s silly that pictures “with” her aren’t allowed. Although, I bet every celebrity has crazy fans. People were jumping over the table just to get their arms around Clinton.

As I said up above.. haaaa.. if this was THAT kind of blog, I’d totally post naked pictures of myself to prove you wrong. Alright, I still wouldn’t but you have to take my word for it. I camouflage like a champ. Although sometimes it doesn’t work. A six year old kid asked me if I was pregnant again. So I punched him. I didn’t, but that kind of honesty is annoying.

    [Reply]

    Michelle Carter Reply:

OMG I was so freaking out about Chelsea being there that I wanted to be crazy fan lady and run up, dive over the table, and force her to take a pic. But I was afraid it would be highly frowned upon. But I did get her to say “OMG! Awwww!” and laugh when I decided I would be a responsible parent and take my 6 year old with me to the signing in a shirt that said “Mini Coslopus” to match mine that said “Coslopus”.

Oh how fun! I’m glad you met him in person – isn’t he great?! I have to admit that we went to high school together so I’ve known him for years and he’s always been so fun. I won’t try to claim that we’re good buddies who talk on the phone all the time, but he does post on my facebook page pretty often. :) Now I’m thinking I may need to send him an email and get my own autographed copy, damnit!

okay, I admit it. I had NO CLUE who he was when I heard the name Clinton Kelly. I knew the show, but not the name/face. So when the event was posted I was all “oooh, that looks kinda fun”…but sorta afraid of appearing before him. Like it would be fashion judgement day. But he looks so nice! I may actually hem my too long pants in his honor now. har har.
