I realize that, as a blogger, this post may seem a little self-serving. Let’s get past that part together.
*sticks out hand*
Go ahead. Hold it. We’re buds. And I keep foaming hand soap in my bathroom.
I’m fairly new on the blogging scene, and before I was a blogger, I was a blog-reader. I bookmarked the ones I liked and whispered things like “Shut your face. She made that?!” while the girls napped. And, when I finally decided to get my feet wet and start my blog, I emailed a blogger I had been following (I know I told this story before, but pretend like I’m Grandpa and humor me). I told Angie I thought her blog was super cute, was toying with the idea of starting my own, and did she have any advice?
Angie’s response to a complete and total stranger emailing her can only be described as gracious and enthusiastic and ended with “Just do it, hon!”
She could have easily blown off the email or sent something discouraging (like… STRANGER DANGER STRANGER DANGER DON’T YOU DARE EMAIL ME AGAIN, CRAZY FACE), but her kind email was the little push I needed. Along with much prodding from Jack. (I’ve got to give credit where credit is due, y’all.)
A year and a half after Angie from the DC area wrote me back, and here I am. I blog. Oh, and? Angie and I are totally buds now.
With that said, I’ve come up with a list of ways you too can show a blogger you like her. Or him. For the sake of brevity, I won’t get caught up in gender-specific pronouns.
So, you like a blogger. Maybe it’s a mom blogger. Maybe it’s a foodie blogger. Maybe it’s a DIY blogger. Maybe it’s a humor blogger that brightens your days with stick figures and hip hop references. I don’t know. Maybe. I don’t know. :) Show her you like her.
1) Subscribe to her blog. Whether you have it bookmarked or pop in every couple days are so, subscribing to her blog does two things. It, number one, ensures that you’ll always get her blog posts in your reader or email, and, number two, it increases her subscriber numbers. Not a huge deal, but if she is a professional blogger, when brands and PR agencies contact her, they’ll ask for her stats. A higher subscriber count helps her out in the long run. How do you subscribe? Bloggers usually have an RSS feed icon in their sidebar or header. Looks like this:
2) Comment. Bloggers love comments – even if the feedback is less than stellar. Did you try out a recipe she posted? Tell her. “Made this last week, and it was baaaangin. My husband loved it, my kids actually ate it, and it was surprisingly easy. Thanks for sharing!” And that blogger will be all, “Oh dang. That’s awesome. Hmm, if she liked that, maybe I’ll post my recipe for macaroons next week.” Personally, I try really, really hard to respond to every comment I get. Sometimes I can’t, especially if it’s a post where the comments are numerous, but I read them all. I laugh at the funny comments, smile at the nice comments, and carefully weigh any critical comments. Sometimes a critical comment is totally off-the-wall cray-cray, but sometimes it’s constructive criticism, and I really appreciate that.
3) Love her on Facebook. If she has a fan page, go ahead and like it up. And if she posts something on Facebook, any feedback is always appreciated. Likes, comments, shares. So great.
4) Follow on Twitter. I am on Twitter, and I go through waves where I’m fairly inactive on it, although I’m trying to be better at it. Not sure how to use Twitter? I wrote a tutorial on it: How to Use Twitter Like a G.
5) Use those little social media buttons at the bottom (or top) of her posts. Mine are at the bottom, and they look like this:
The first one is for Facebook. If you click “like” then that number goes up by one, and Facebook painlessly posts it onto your profile, which suddenly gives us exposure to all of your friends. The second one is for Twitter. Clicking on it pulls up a Tweet for you – you can personalize it and your Twitter followers will see it. The third is for Google +, which maybe only four of us use. The last is for StumbleUpon. If you’re a Stumbler, give a girl a stumble if you like the post. :)
6) Tell your fraaaaaands. Word of mouth is fantastic. Via email. Via message board. Via text message. I found out an author I like has a blog I now like. I texted over the link to my friend. Boom. Now she has two fans. I hesitate to show this next part to you, because I don’t want you to think I’m stalker-y. I noticed my blog was getting hits from a site in another country. So, I clicked on the link and found that NiceGirlNotes had been recommended as a blog to read.
7) Pin her up. Pinterest is still pretty new, but it has taken off like wiiiiildfire. If you like a blog post, pin it! I like to stick a handy Pin It button under images to make it easy. :)
8) Shoot her an email, as long as it’s cool if you don’t get an email back right away. I try to be quick about responding, but more often than not, my inbox count is in the triple digits. Still, it’s hysterical when I get emails like this:
![]()
She has since emailed me in a sober state and recanted the part about Eddie Vedder. Which is totally fine. One day I long to be Eddie-Vedder-cool. Or Will-Smith-cool. Or Justin-Bieber-heartthrobby.
SHORTY IS AN EENIE-MEENIE-MINEY-MOE LOVERRRRRRRR.
Oh, right. Where were we? Not Bieber-ing, if memory serves.
Feel free to add to the list and/or sing along with me.

Eddie Vedder, huh? This kinda looks like your promo, beach, windy pic??????? No?

Well Lisa…Proud Canadian…I am from the Northern high line in MT…so my use of “eh” is an everyday occurrence…that the people in the South (where I now reside) do not get. And also they don’t understand that MT (the FOURTH largest state) is not in Canada.

I think this is a good time to share a text I sent my BFF back in October: “Do yourself a favor and check out a blog called Nice Girl Notes. You can also add her on Facebook. You will laugh every day. We want to hang out with this chick, I’m telling you.”
Yours is the only blog I subscribe to and it makes me LOL every time I read it! Being a forty-something mom of four kids, ages 18, 16, 8, and 7, I like to think reading your blog keeps me vaguely cool with the teens (I now like to refer to myself as a “baller” and I’m trying to work “oh my dang” into my vernacular) and gives me fun ideas for my little ones.
